The founding house of Cooperative Roots was obtained by a collection of fomer members of the University Students Cooperative Association. Through contacts with the Seventh Generation Land Trust, a 3-story residence was located in South Berkeley. The house is located across the street from Malcom X Elementary School and a few blocks from the Ashby BART station.

An agreement has been reached with the current owner to purchase the property, pending renovations to make the house habitable for a larger number of occupants. Life at the house is an experiment in community. Residents share everything from chores to democractic decision-making. Food is bought and consumed in large quantities.
